With reliably good snow throughout the winter months and a stunning setting in the Himalayas, Auli is India’s premier ski destination. Located in the state of Uttarakhand close to the religious shrine of Badrinath, Auli sits at an elevation of 2,500 – 3,050 meters above sea level looking out across to Nanda Devi, India’s tallest mountain peak. The skiing season runs from January to March. It offers gentle slopes measuring 5km in length, a 500m rope tow that runs parallel to the main slope, a chairlift between the upper and lower slopes, and a state-of-the-art cable car linking the town of Joshimath with the upper slope. Auli is also a great destination in the warmer summer months when the scenery is stunning and hiking opportunities are aplenty. Once the snow has melted the dark greens of the coniferous and oak forests that carpet the mountain slopes are revealed and hikers can enjoy incredible vistas of the Himalayan mountains.
